The Senate's in-house security department monitors Senate spaces 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year. They are charged with keeping order, checking press credentials and ensuring that Senators are not disturbed in the performance of their duties. They also respond to security calls from Senate Capitol and district offices, facilitate parking requests, requests for badges and other requests made by Members and staff.

At the direction of the current Secretary, the department is now also responsible for providing security training for Members and staff, and for oversight and direction of the Senate Continuity of Operations Plan. The Director of the Department also serves as the Chief Sergeant-at-Arms. As such, he performs the task of bearing the mace when escorting the Senate to joint sessions held in the House and when escorting the Senate to other special ceremonies.
